Residents of Locust Street between 24th and 25th woke up to an unfortunate sight Sunday morning as multiple cars fell victim to a series of smash-and-grab thefts.
Nine vehicles with smashed curb-side windows were visible as of 7:30 AM Sunday morning.
The incident was reported to the police at 7:36 AM. Each of the targeted vehicles had their center consoles open, indicating a systematic approach by the thieves.
Vehicles on both sides of Locust Street were targeted.
By 9 AM, residents had started assessing the damage and sweeping up glass debris. A resident of the Locust Point residential complex, whose car was among those targeted, observed that older vehicles were primarily affected, while newer cars on the block appeared untouched.
A police cruiser arrived by 9:30 AM to take reports from the victims.
Authorities are investigating the situation. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles are secured.
City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, who represents the neighborhood in Council, addressed the situation in a statement to The Fitler Focus. "The recent vehicle break-ins on Locust Street between 24th and 25th streets are absolutely unacceptable. I understand the frustration and concern these incidents have caused to many people in our community,” he said.
“I strongly recommend that residents work closely with the 9th Police District, as well as its advisory board, to communicate your concerns regarding these ongoing break-ins in the immediate area. Your input is vital,” the statement continued.
In a followup email, Johnson’s office confirmed that the 9th district police captain is sending additional bike and plain clothes officers to patrol the area.
