Jezabel’s Cafe is no longer moving forward with its new Fitler Square location after neighborhood opposition quashed the zoning variance needed to open the cafe.
i don't live in the neighborhood at this time but am a longtime fan of jezebel's. sorry to read this depressing story of philly nimbyism, which I hope is on the decline. those who support should come out & make themselves heard if there is another meeting to consider the variance. Or, perhaps jezebel will consider bella vista where I think we would love another great cafe!
I live down the street and would genuinely love for all the people who opposed this to explain why without using phrases like "changing the character." Businesses like Southgate, Lutecia and Rival are along the exact same corridor and don't cause the same issues as far as I know. Happy to be wrong here I just don't get it. I missed the zoning meetings and am really sad to not see this happen. Also the people suggesting she rent the huge spaces on South or the corner with the old 7-11 clearly have never tried to rent space in this city and don't understand the insane price per square foot of retail store fronts.
We have so many special memories of our weekend routine at Jezabels in Fitler Square. We would grab a empanada to go or sit and have a morning latte before we would walk to the park with our little dog. It is very hard to believe that people would feel this way. The corner in question has been hectic for years after Jezabels left due to the multiple apartments/houses under construction with large dumpsters, trucks. The chaos was not attributed to people walking to pick up an empanada in the morning. This is a shame. Wishing you all the best Jezabel and we hope you know that you bring joy to so many!

As a neighbor, living a block away, I'd love this to open. I'm baffled by the opposition here. I wish I'd known about the opportunity for feedback!
